At the eastern end of The Swale, the oyster town of Whitstable was one of the first places chosen for the RNLI’s new inshore lifeboats in 1963. It runs an Atlantic 85, and its crews have earned a Bronze Medal and a series of Vellums for skilful rescues on a shallow, exposed coast.
In 1963, as leisure boating grew, the RNLI began trials of small, fast inshore lifeboats that could be launched quickly by just a few people. Whitstable, in Kent, was one of the first places chosen, and the experiment proved an immediate success.
