Explore two centuries of RNLI lifeboat history, heroic rescues, and the enduring tradition of saving lives at sea.
From the sheltered harbour at Stonehaven, beneath the cliffs that lead to Dunnottar Castle, the station runs a fast Atlantic 85 along the rugged Kincardineshire coast south of Aberdeen. Lifesaving here goes back to 1854, and the present RNLI station was re-established in 2013.
A lifeboat was first placed at Stonehaven by the Kincardineshire Lifeboat Association in 1854, and the RNLI took over in 1868. The station’s darkest day came on 27 February 1874, when the lifeboat St George, returning from a barque that had not in fact needed her, capsized crossing the bar at Aberdeen; four of her crew were lost.
The RNLI station closed in 1934, reopened as an inshore station in 1967, and closed again in 1984; for many years afterwards the local Maritime Rescue Institute provided cover. After that charity closed, the RNLI returned to Stonehaven in 2013, and a fine new station on the quay was opened in 2025.
