At Southwold on the Suffolk coast, a lifeboat has served since 1841, the station passing to the RNLI in 1854. After closing in 1940, it re-opened as an inshore station in 1963, and today operates an Atlantic 85 from Southwold Harbour.
The Southwold Lifeboat Society stationed a lifeboat in 1841, after wrecks on the Barnard Sand and between Walberswick and Dunwich; the RNLI took over in 1854. The station closed in 1940 when a wartime boom was placed across the harbour, and re-opened as an inshore lifeboat station in 1963.
