Rye Harbour carries one of the most poignant names in the RNLI. A lifeboat has served Rye Bay since 1803, and the station holds three Gold and six Silver Medals — but it is forever remembered for the Mary Stanford disaster of 1928, when its entire crew of seventeen was lost. An inshore lifeboat has served here again since 1966.
A lifeboat paid for by local subscription was placed at Rye Harbour in 1803, the station later passing to the RNLI. After the 1928 disaster the station was closed; the grade II listed Mary Stanford boathouse, standing alone out in the bay, was never used again and remains a memorial. An inshore lifeboat returned to Rye Harbour in 1966.
