Hunstanton is the only lifeboat station on England’s east coast that faces west, looking out across The Wash. A lifeboat has served here since 1824; today the station is one of only a handful operating a rescue hovercraft alongside an Atlantic 85, ideal for the area’s vast tidal sands and mudflats.
A lifeboat was first placed at Hunstanton in 1824 by the Norfolk Shipwreck Association; the RNLI ran a station from 1867 until 1931, and re-established an inshore station in 1979. Hunstanton saw the RNLI’s first motor tractor.
In 2003 Hunstanton received the hovercraft Hunstanton Flyer, becoming the second RNLI hovercraft station.
