At the mouth of the Stour and Orwell, Harwich guards one of the country’s great deep-water harbours and the approaches to its busy ferry port. A lifeboat first served here in 1821, with the RNLI taking over in 1878; today the station runs a Severn-class all-weather lifeboat and an Atlantic 85.
A lifeboat station was first established at Harwich in 1821 by the Essex Lifeboat Association, but closed in 1826. The RNLI established the station in 1878, and it has covered the harbour approaches and outlying sands ever since.
