On the north side of Cullercoats Harbour in North Tyneside, a lifeboat station has served since 1852, its grade II-listed 1896 boathouse still in use today. Cullercoats now operates a B-class Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat, and its history is marked by both great gallantry and great loss.
A lifeboat station was established at Cullercoats by the RNIPLS in 1852, funded by Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland, who paid for both the first lifeboat (named Percy) and a stone boathouse; the RNIPLS became the RNLI in 1854. The present brick boathouse of 1896, funded by the Co-operative Wholesale Society, is grade II listed.
After a coastal review, Cullercoats’ all-weather lifeboat was withdrawn in 1969, the station having operated a D-class inshore lifeboat since 1965; inshore lifeboats have served ever since.
