Aldeburgh has launched its lifeboats from the open shingle of Crag Path since 1851. Its history is marked by the 1899 disaster, when seven lifeboatmen were lost, and by the long-serving Cable family of coxswains. The station now operates an Atlantic 85 and a D-class from the beach.
A station was established at Aldeburgh by the RNIPLS in 1851 (the RNIPLS became the RNLI in 1854), drawing on a crew that had earlier manned a boat at Sizewell Gap. For many years the station kept two lifeboats.
In October 2024 the station’s Mersey-class all-weather lifeboat Freddie Cooper was retired after 30 years, and Aldeburgh became an inshore station with an Atlantic 85.
