Walton and Frinton has served the Essex coast and its treacherous offshore sands since 1884, long working an all-weather lifeboat moored offshore. Following an RNLI review of Essex cover, its all-weather lifeboat was withdrawn in 2024; a boat is retained on station for training while the station’s future role is decided.
The RNLI opened a station at Walton-on-the-Naze in 1884, with the self-righting lifeboat Honourable Artillery Company. For well over a century it operated an all-weather lifeboat moored afloat, covering the Gunfleet and other sands.
In October 2022 the RNLI announced changes to Essex lifeboat cover; in April 2024 the Tamar-class all-weather lifeboat was withdrawn, leaving no operational lifeboat on station. The former boarding boat John Wickens (D-798) remains for training and evaluation.
