At Garrison Point, where the Medway meets the Thames estuary, Sheerness has guarded the busy estuary approaches since 1969. Though a relatively modern station, its crews have earned four gallantry medals — including a Silver for the dramatic rescue from the radio ship Mi Amigo.
In 1969, after the RAF withdrew its rescue helicopters from Manston, the RNLI placed an all-weather lifeboat at Sheerness on evaluation; following a successful trial the station was made permanent in 1971. An inshore lifeboat was added the same year.
From 1985 the lifeboat moved to Gun Wharf Steps, and a Trent class served for 25 years from 1996 until the present Shannon arrived in 2021.
