From the pier at Portree, the largest town on the Isle of Skye, the station runs a Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat over the Sound of Raasay and the north-west coast of Skye. The RNLI established the station in 1991.
After a review of cover on the west coast, the RNLI established a lifeboat station at Portree in 1991, on a twelve-month evaluation that quickly became permanent. The nearest other stations were far off — Mallaig, Stornoway and Lochinver all many miles away — leaving a long stretch of the Skye coast newly protected.
A former fish-processing building on Portree Pier was converted into the station, opening in 1994. The town overlooks the sheltered harbour and the Sound of Raasay, but the station’s waters take in the exposed north and west of Skye.
For thirty years Portree ran the Trent-class Stanley Watson Barker; in April 2026 she was replaced by a new Shannon-class lifeboat, the Peter and Mary.
