From the fishing harbour at the head of Loch Inver, beneath the great peaks of Assynt, Lochinver runs a Severn-class all-weather lifeboat over the wild north-west coast and The Minch, up towards Cape Wrath. A lifeboat has served here since 1967.
After winter trials in 1966–67, the RNLI placed an all-weather lifeboat at Lochinver in August 1967, on the remote coast of Sutherland (now Highland), to cover a long and exposed stretch of the north-west where help had been far away.
The station’s gallantry came in December 2014, when the crew launched into darkness and a gale to the fish carrier Norholm, drifting powerless towards Cape Wrath with four aboard. After two tow ropes parted and the Thurso lifeboat was called to help, the boat was brought to safety nearly twelve hours after launching; for his courage and determination Coxswain David MacAskill received the Bronze Medal.
Lochinver has run the Severn-class Julian and Margaret Leonard since 2003.
