Cromer — the first lifeboat station in Norfolk, established in 1804 — is among the most celebrated in the RNLI, home to Henry Blogg, the most decorated lifeboatman in its history. With 56 gallantry medals, it operates a Tamar-class all-weather lifeboat from the pier and a D-class from the beach.
A lifeboat was first placed at Cromer in 1804 by a local committee — the first in Norfolk — passing to the Norfolk Shipwreck Association in 1823 and to the RNLI in 1857. Since 1923 the town has kept two lifeboats, the larger working the outlying sands.
In the 1920s a boathouse was built at the end of Cromer Pier, enabling a motor lifeboat to launch beyond the breakers; it remains the home of the all-weather boat.
