In the small harbour village of Craster, midway between Seahouses and Amble, the RNLI has run an inshore lifeboat station since August 1969. A single D-class inshore lifeboat provides a fast response along this rocky stretch of the Northumberland coast.
Craster’s station was established in August 1969, part of the RNLI’s national expansion of small, fast inshore lifeboats that began in 1964 to meet the rise in coastal leisure activity. The first lifeboat was an unnamed D-class (D-130), replaced in 1975 by D-228.
Unlike the older harbour stations along this coast, Craster has been an inshore-only station throughout its history, never having operated an all-weather lifeboat.
