On the north bank at Corney Reach in west London, Chiswick is — year after year — the RNLI’s second busiest station after Tower. One of the four Thames stations opened in 2002, it runs two fast E-class lifeboats and can launch within ninety seconds.
Chiswick was one of the four stations established on the tidal Thames in 2002, following the inquiry into the 1989 Marchioness disaster. It began on 2 January 2002 with an E-class “Tiger Marine” fast boat, named Chelsea Pensioner at the Royal Hospital Chelsea that July.
Within two months of opening it had become the country’s second busiest station, a position it has held ever since; between 2002 and mid-2018 it answered 3,387 incidents and rescued more than 1,620 people.
