Happisburgh (historically “Hasborough”) has guarded the dangerous Haisborough Sands since 1866. Coastal erosion forced the station inland to Cart Gap, from where a D-class inshore lifeboat now launches across the beach.
The RNLI formed a station at Old Cart Gap in 1866, between the Palling and Bacton stations, where vessels were frequently driven ashore on the shifting Haisborough Sands.
Severe coastal erosion washed away the launching ramp in 2002; a relocated station at Cart Gap has served since, and the inshore lifeboat operates from there today.
